YEMAYA’S STORY:

1967 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser For Sale

$38,500

Color: Seafoam Green. Mileage: 5,800. Has a 2024 Maine Inspection Sticker.

Manual transmission – “three on the tree.” Same owner for 20 years

VIN#: FJ40-42980

Yemaya has had various repairs and upgrades since I bought her 20 years ago in 2004. I purchased her from a man in West Texas who bought her from a farmer—who I believe was the original owner though I'm not 100% certain—who kept her in a barn and hardly drove her. The man I bought her from wanted a hunting vehicle, but his father-in-law took her and totally repainted her (his work was painting Porches, Jaguars, Maserati’s, etc.), and when Yemaya came back to him, she was too pristine to be used as a hunting vehicle, so he sold her to me. She's been all over the country and even to Naxos, Greece (long story!). While in California she had quite a bit of work done, but I had encephalitis and don't recall exactly what was done...I believe she had a new transmission, starter, and gear shifting thing, but again, I'm so sorry but that was a long time ago and my brain was both inflamed and (unbeknownst to me) growing a tumor in my frontal lobe. Years earlier, she was also serviced by an incredible mechanic in Santa Fe, NM (Eldorado Automotive; in Eldorado just outside Santa Fe).

Much of the work was done more recently in Rhode Island by Master Mechanic, John Conti of Conti Service in Cranston. Conti Service is a family run business, and they loved Yemaya, loved me (and I them)—and repaired her as if they were pediatricians and Yemaya was my child—because they, like me, believed I was going to drive and keep her forever. From RI I had Yemaya shipped directly to Rockport Automotive (in Rockport, Maine, just north of Rockland). They got her inspection-worthy (so she could be given a Maine Inspection sticker—including a new front window, new tires, etc.). I have receipts from them ($2,514.06) and from Conti Service ($27,239.38) including the original receipts (both digital and paper copies). I’ve attached the doc I typed up showing all work that was over $20.

To be perfect, she needs a new paint job on the exterior and on the interior of the roof, as well as welding around the seal of the roof (if desired, though they're built to get wet, and have places on the floor for water to drain out). The minor dent on the right front fender could be straightened before repainting. She also needs a second windshield wiper. When I drove her regularly, the only real problem I had was that for some reason her windshield wipers would fly off the metal arms. But that was during monsoon season in NM, and those monsoons could get pretty crazy. I lived in an adobe house on a dirt road and even in the clayey mess during heavy rains she drove right along without any problems or fishtailing (even without putting her into four-wheel-drive).

Yemaya is my only asset. Starting to be in the world at this late stage in life—after surviving forty years of brain illnesses—it would be easy to give up, but I need to hold on a bit longer and keep the faith that somehow I'll be able to own a home and earn enough money for bills, which would banish the constant stress I’ve been under for some time. There’s no way I’d be selling her if I didn’t have to…and just hope someone kind and wonderful buys her, takes good care of her, enjoys driving her, and loves her as I have.
